Idea behind CleanBoard Hybrid 2s & 3s charging board.

Since the release of CleanBoard Tiny – 1s serial charging board where You can safely plug charged and discharged batteries together, I wanted to give the same experience to people who want to charge batteries other than 1s lipo only. Now, with CleanBoard hybryd it’s possible with 2s and 3s batteries!

It’s a clever hybrid between series and parallel connection and that is exactly where the name came from 🙂

 

What is the “safe zone”? 

Safe zone is the part of CleanBoard Hybrid charging board that You can use without worrying about checking voltage of a single lipo battery. 

Each row of connectors in CleanBoard hybrid creates batteries connected in series (green).

This means that whenever You plug your 2s or 3s batteries in one row only, you are safe to plug in – even If batteries are in completely different state of charge. Yes! Charged and discharged together safely.

Every single row is a safe zone (green), but only one row at a time. When you plug 4th 2s lipo battery or 3rd 3s lipo You will be forced to plug the last battery in another row, so you enter NO SAFE zone, and each battery needs to be similar voltage to the one plugged above it (red).

Danger: Plugging 2s and 3s batteries at the same time is not recommended.

 

What if I want to charge more than tree 2s or two 3s? 

Many people will need to charge more batteries at the same time.

That is why there is a place for up to six lipo batteries at the same time at CleanBoard hybrid, but remember – every column of CleanBoard hybrid is parallel to each other (red).

This means that if you plug more than three 2s lipo or two 3s lipo, the batteries should be checked before plugging and in similar voltage. It is recommended to plug batteries with no more than 0.2V difference for one cell: 0.4V difference between 2s lipo batteries, or 0.6V difference between 3s batteries.

Don’t worry – CleanBoard hybrid should withstand more, but it is not recommended as it may be dangerous.

 

Real world LiPo charging scenario:

Imagine you’re at the flying spot and need to focus on flying, but you want to recharge some of lipo packs at the same time. Just:

1. Plug up to three 2s or two 3s batteries without worrying about their voltage. (Use one row only)
2. Move the jumper to a place corresponding to how many lipos you plugged.
3. Charge / discharge / storage.

Done! It’s that easy!

Later that day, when you come back home from flying most probably you have many more lipos to storage, or discharge.

That’s when all six ports comes handy:

1. Check and note voltage of each lipo.
2. Group it in similar voltage sub groups.
3. Plug up to 6 lipo (of similar voltage) at the same time.
4. Move the jumper to a place corresponding to how many lipos you plugged. 
5. Storage / discharge / charge.

DIY kit, why it’s better for You?

I wanted the basic functional charging board to be the same price as CleanBoard tiny. It is not easy with prizes of each component going higher and higher due to inflation. That is why the case pcb and mounting screws are not included and needs to be bought separately.

Although I think it looks super nice with “Case PCB”, if you want to lower the final price just don’t buy it. Print your own case and be happy about it!

On the other hand If you don’t own a 3d printer, “case PCB” set is a great idea to protect the bottom of the board against shorts or against any damage.

 

I have xt30 / xt60 lipo batteries, will CleanBoard hybrid work with my batteries?

Yes! The magic of CleanBoard hybrid charging board is that it uses balancer ports only to charge. It does not matter if your batteries are xt30, or xt60. Just plug the balancer port – leave xt30 / xt60 unplugged – and charge!
