Basics of 1s Lipo Batteries for Tiny Whoop.

Batteries for Tiny Whoop comes in different brands and form factors. My even use different plugs to connect to Your drone, or to Your charger. These have one thing in common, in 99% of cases these use LiPo technology. Why do we use LiPo batteries for drones? They are lightweight and are able to give much power instantly to Your drone. Because of that it may be dangerous to charge them, but when You stick to some basic rules, You will be safe!

How do i know if my battery is charged or discharged?

We are familiar with batteries charge state to be shown in percentage. That is how we see it in our phones, flashlights and all other electric devices. In FPV drones world we use Voltage (V) instead of percentage (%), but don’t be discouraged it is really easy. Just remember those few numbers:

1s LiPo Voltage to remember easily.

3.5 V – It is completely safe to discharge 1s LiPo batteries to 3.5V.
3.0 V – 1s Lipo batteries discharged to below 3.0V may loose its capacity permanently, or get permanently damaged.
4.2 V / 4.35 V – Fully charged 1s Lipo batteries will have the voltage of 4.2. For Lipo labeled HV (high voltage) it is 4.35 V
3.8 V – 1s LiPo Storage voltage. It is a safe voltage for 1s LiPo batteries to be stored for a longer period of time. If You know You will not be flying for more than couple of days, batteries „stored” in 3.8 V will remain its capacity for longer periods of time safely. It is really wise to get a storage charger for Your 1s LiPo to last longer.

The practice of using 1s Lipo batteries.

Theory is not that hard here, right? Storage charger Your 1s LiPo batteries in 3.8 V, when You know You will be flying soon, charge it to 4.2 V, or 4.35 V if the latel on Your liPo says it is HV. Fly it down to 3.5 V, or even a bit longer. I usually finish when my LiPo is about 3.2V, but never overextend it lower than 3.0V. After You finished flying, put Your batteries to storage voltage. Remember what was the number? Yes, 3.8 V is the 1s LiPo storage voltage.

What is 1s Lipo charge C Rating?

When charging 1s LiPo batteries, You will hear a term of „C rating”. C rating means how fast You charge Your 1s LiPos in Amps (A) compared to its (mah) Capacity. You will hear that 1C charge rate is safe and that is true. It basically means that You will charge Your 1s Lipo is about an hour.

What is my 1s LiPo 1C charge rate?

Super basic math. Just take Your LiPo battery capacity (mah) from its label and divide it by 1000. Lets say You have a 450mah 1s GNB LiPo:

450mah / 1000 = 0.45 A

Another example, 350 mah 1s LiPo battery:

350mah / 1000 = 0.35 A

The rule is:

LiPo capacity from its label / 1000 = amount of Amps (A) to set Your charger

1s Lipo Bt 2.0 and Ph 2.0 plugs.

There are many different plugs that 1s LiPo may have, but I will focus on two because 99% of Tiny Whoops in the world use one or another.

Ph 2.0 is the most common and popular plug.

It is rated up to 4A of current draw, very easy to buy everywhere and fairly inexpensive. Their drawback is that they ware out fast and needs to be change once in a while to deliver power.

Bt 2.0 for BetaFPV for those who want more.

More power, more secure, but more expensive as well. Rated for up to 9A is more than any Tiny Whoop needs. Bt2.0 don’t ware out easily, like Ph2.0 do. The problem is that is is much more expensive compared to Ph2.0 and Bt2.0 1s Lipo batteries with this connectors are harder to find and buy.
